Korean Baseball- Go Wyverns!

Even being from Boston, I have only been to a handful of baseball games in my life. I’ve always enjoyed going though because of the atmosphere of a game; peanuts, popcorn, crowded stands, etc. But the difference between a Korean baseball game and an American one (not the players as some are actually American) is that baseball is treated much more like American football here. There are cheerleaders, theme music, screaming fans with inflated noisemakers, and even a screen with a “chug-cam” in addition to the cliche kiss cam. Perhaps even the better comparison for the atmosphere of this game is the student section of college American football game. Fans go wild.

Chadwick bought out a whole section of the stands for the Wyverns (local Incheon team) on Friday night for faculty and staff. The section was low to the field with great views of the game, but even better views of the during game entertainment. I must admit, I actually think I watched the cheerleaders and game announcer more then I watched the actual game. But that was because I had never seen anything like it before! The dance style was so different then what one sees at a sports game in the states, and the music was lot catchier, featuring popular K-pop songs. Looking around the stands, everyone was out of their seats dancing and cheering along. Except when the other team was at bat, apparently you are supposed to sit down for that. However, the Chadwick International crowd was not the best at listening to the baseball guidelines. There’s a video my friend took where the announcer at one point, while trying to pump up the crowd, says in Korean for everyone to say “Wyverns” when he says “SK.” But, since half the crowd in front of him was international and didn’t understand, the video is basically him yelling “SK” and all of us yelling “SK” back . . . not exactly what was supposed to happen.
